Get Back in That Pen!

Baby calves loose in the driveway

We have quite a few baby calves around the farm right now. But one pen, here in front of the house, has quite a few calves that are all relatively the same age. Those calves consistently escape to explore and more than once we have had to tell them to get back in that pen!

That pasture is surrounded on two sides by a wooden fence. But on the other two sides, there is only a single strand of hot wire. At this age, the calves are just small enough that they can walk directly under the hot wire without getting shocked. They just walk right out of the pen and get into trouble!

Repair the Breach – Faith from the Farm

Green pasture with a muddy water crossing

Well, we have finally done it!  We have finally gotten to the point that we are going to fix this crossing! Now this area was previously used not only for the cattle to pass over, but for tractors and equipment, even trucks, to cross from pasture to pasture. But over time and with the heavy rains that we have had, maintenance of this area has not been done and it shows. It is time to repair the breach!

Our cattle cross here twice a day from late fall through mid spring. Daily, the cattle are led across to the winter pasture and left in for several hours and then led back across. They can only stay in the winter pasture for a few hours and the only way that they can get there is across this end of the pond.

The part of this crossing that is covered by water, is not that deep and has a rock bottom. Now you can’t tell, but the end of the crossing closest to the winter pasture, where the water ends and before the grass begins, is deep and extremely muddy. I would have loved to have videoed the cattle going across, but I am for certain someone would have had terrible things to say about it and us!

A Hunting We Will Go!

We’ve all been doing a little hunting here lately around the house. In the afternoon, after the cows are fed and the work is done, we try to sneak away to the stand for an hour or so, looking for the ever-elusive white tail.

We are probably what some would call “a hunting family.” We all hunt; some more than others. Our kids even enjoy taking their friends and sharing the experience with others.

We have hunted in warm weather, cold weather , rain and sun. (In south Mississippi, we call that last week!) Always hunting with the hope of seeing “the big one.” I personally, am not the cold and rainy type of hunter, but I do enjoy spending time in the stand!
